Sizes & Shapes

The origin of a rug can dictate what sizes may be available. Most Oriental rugs imported from India, Pakistan & China are woven using the American standard measurement of feet and inches.

Basic Guidelines

  • 8′ × 11′ or larger: Dining room, large living room, large family room.
  • 5′ × 8′ / 6′ × 9′: Family room, living room, small dinette, entry foyer, den, office.
  • 3′ × 5′ / 4′ × 6′: Entry foyer, small family/living room, kitchen, bath, office, or as an accent.
  • Runner: Hallways, stairs, or as an accent.

Common sizes available include

  • 2′ × 3′
  • 8′ × 10′
  • 2′ 6″ × 4′
  • 9′ × 12′
  • 3′ × 5′
  • 10′ × 14′
  • 4′ × 6′
  • 12′ × 15′
  • 6′ × 9′
  • 12′ × 18′
Sometimes rugs are what we call cut-size, which means that a 9′ × 12′ rug may actually measure 8′ 6″ × 11′ 6″. The smaller size rug should cost less because of a 7 square foot difference.

Other Size Options

  • 3′ to 10′ circles and squares
  • Runners: 2′ 6″ to 3′ wide by 6′ to 24′ long
  • Wide runners (Kellegi): 4′ to 7′ wide by 10′ to 18′ long

Metric Sizes

Rugs from Iran, Turkey and Afghanistan often follow the metric system. To convert:

  • Feet to meters: feet × 0.305
  • Inches to centimeters: inches × 2.54

Common metric sizes:

  • 2 m × 3 m (~6′ 7″ × 9′ 10″)
  • 3 m × 4 m (~9′ 10″ × 13′ 1″)
